Mindfulness Book Review: Learn How To Practice

Mindfulness Book

Inside my review of the “Mindfulness – A Practical Guide To Finding Peace In A Frantic World” Book, I reveal my pros and cons.

The book is authored by Mark Williams and Danny Penman. It also includes a foreword by Jon Kabat-Zinn. The book itself also comes with a free CD of great guided meditations. Very practical and useful.

Today you are going to find out how this Mindfulness book can potentially help you. As I already mentioned the book comes with a free CD of great guided meditations. The book explains an eight week program learning practical mindfulness techniques. Lets get started with my review of this book and the free CD that comes with the book.

My First Impressions

I started to read this book recently and it makes a lot of sense. I have not got too far into it, but it makes a lot of sense so far. They explain that the process of “feeling not great” can lead to a downward path, and the solution is meditation, however they explain it really well. They also explain the importance of adapting that “life is not a race, not with yourself or with others” attitude.

Overview Of My Review

The book comes with an audio CD that has eight different guided meditations. I have done each of these and must say I am impressed. The speaker has a calm way of explaining things really well.

Introduction

mindfulnessThis is a practical self help book for anxiety and stress.

The book is based on Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT for short). MBCT can help people who are finding life an uphill battle and finding life to be challenging, and maybe because of this, are stressed or anxious or exhausted.

In my opinion, don’t worry too much about what MBCT is. Just know that it is something that is helpful. The scientifically based methods outlined are practical and down to earth.

My Review

This book explains things in a way that a normal person can understand and the audio CD that comes with the book contains eight guided meditations. In this book, you “can learn the simple mindfulness meditations at the heart of MBCT. You’ll be surprised by how quickly you can be back in control and able to enjoy life again.”

What is this book about?

This book is about giving you additional information and tools to help you in your battle with anxiety or stress. I repeat myself, you “can learn the simple mindfulness meditations at the heart of MBCT. You’ll be surprised by how quickly you can be back in control and able to enjoy life again.”

Who is this book for?

This is for anyone who wants to be able to be on top of life. Life can be challenging and can throw a lot of things at you. We, including you and I, need tools and methods and techniques based on real world requirements so that we can get back in control and able to enjoy life again.

This book is for anyone who wants to free themselves from anxiety and stress. As Ruby Wax put it, “If you want to free yourself from anxiety and stress, then read this book”.

How this book helped me?

Over the last while, I have learned a lot about stress and anxiety. I purchased this book myself in order to check out for myself does it deliver. I only have the book a short while now, and what I have read so far, I feel that the information is solid. I have also listened to each of the eight audio meditations in the free CD that comes with the book, a number of times and must say I am pleased. I am finding that some of the phrases used in the meditations are really helpful that I have not heard in other meditations by other people.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book, especially the eight week Mindfulness Program. And to doing the associated partner meditations at the appropriate times. My gut feeling at this stage, is that it will be time well spent.

Pros of this book

  • The free CD contains eight separate different meditation tracks, each one is excellent
  • The book comes with an eight week plan
  • I find that the content in the book makes a lot of sense
  • The scientifically based methods outlined are practical and down to earth.

Cons of this book

  • Although the book supplied an alternative web link for the meditations on the audio CD, I had to be a member of another cloud based service in order to do this. I just was not keen to sign up for yet another cloud based service for something that I was supposed to be able to “download for free” with no issues and without exposing my email address to potential spam and the like. It just seemed as an “unexpected and unwelcome” obstacle for me and was a “total turnoff for me”. Luckily for me, after doing some additional online research, I was able to use a process called “ripping” which allowed me to copy the contents of the audio CD over to my laptop. Easy enough when you know how. For a book about helping people reduce anxiety or stress, this issue should not be here. They should have a simple and effective way to allow readers of the book download the eight meditations with no issues and no concerns with no stress and with no anxiety. After all, the book is a bestseller, so they should be able to come up with something.

Why I recommend this book?

At this stage, I have listened to each of the eight guided meditations on a number of occasions and have added them on an ad hoc basis to my daily meditation practice. Mark Williams, who is the speaker on these guided meditations has a very calm voice. He leads each of those eight guided meditations really well. The sound quality on the recordings are excellent.

As I have already mentioned in “my first impressions of this book” section, “The book comes with an audio CD that has eight different guided meditations. I have done each of these and must say I am impressed. The speaker has a calm way of explaining things really well. I know that I am supposed to spend a week or so on each one having read the applicable chapter in the book before hand, however I am keen. I will most likely follow the ‘proper’ order later with the appropriate times.”

My Rating

I rate the excellent book with free CD, “Mindfulness – A Practical Guide To Finding Peace In A Frantic World” as 4.5 stars out of 5.0 stars.

If you don’t yet have this book, you can buy one at Amazon or at The Book Depository.

  1. Great book review about the mindfulness for people who are looking for a way out of stress.
I am a book fan but mostly read personal development.
I love this book because you said it has “tools” to help you. These days it is hard to have book like that because it ends up being a book that accumulates dust in the shelf of people.

    • Hi Thabo,

Yes, I agree that “tools” are very important to people so that they can use these “tools” as they are required. As a said in my book review, the free audio CD that comes with the book contains eight guided meditations. Each one of these eight meditations is a “tool” in its own right. All you need to do is copy them over to your laptop, or maybe your smartphone, and then you would be able to do them in an appropriate place of your own choosing.

I would consider that this book would be a good mix for you, as you read mostly personal development. Daniel Goleman, the best selling author of Emotional Intelligence says “Want a happier, more content life? I highly recommend the down-to-earth methods you find in Mindfulness. Professor Mark Williams and Dr Danny Penman have teamed up to give us scientifically grounded techniques we can apply in the midst of our everyday challenges and catastrophes’.

I think that you would find the book very helpful.

      Peace,

  2. Hi David.
This book does look very interesting.
I don’t think it’s the kind of book I need or would read myself, but I know 2 people (friends) who I know would benefit from reading this book and doing the guided meditations.
I will definitely pass your website address to them so that they can read your review themselves. I’m pretty sure that they will be interested in getting this book to help them deal with their stress and anxiety.
A great review, thank you very much.
    Best wishes,
    Michael

    • Hi Michael,

What makes this book more interesting is the fact that the free CD of guided meditations that comes with the book are very useful and applicable. One of the guided meditations is just over 3 minutes long. No matter how busy and frantic you day is, you can (nearly) always get in a guided meditation that is just over 3 minutes long.

I hope that your friends get the book and do the guided meditations. I am pretty sure that it will help them with their stress and anxiety.

I am a big fan of meditation and was doing meditation on a daily basis before I purchased this book myself. I am finding that the additional information in this book very useful and beneficial to me. I am finding the partner guided meditations in the free CD that comes with the book great, and use those guided meditations a lot.

      Peace,
      David

    • Hi Vicki,

You really nailed it. This book with its partner CD of guided meditations can be really helpful. The shortest guided meditations is just over 3 minutes long. No matter how busy and frantic you day is, you can (nearly) always get in a guided meditation that is just over 3 minutes long. This is valuable in that it gives you a chance to relax for a few minutes and this is always good.

  4. Hi David…thanks for the article and book review.

Definitely worth checking out. I totally agree that meditation is definitely the way to go in bringing inner peace…too many of us just don’t do it.

I’m convinced that as humans we need to develop ourselves daily physically, mentally and spiritually. Most of us probably do the first 2…but neglect the latter, which is such a crucial component.

Books like this definitely help because sometimes we just need that guiding principle, even though meditation may “seem” to be easy to do.

    • Hi Zulfaqar,

Thank you. Meditation is an activity that helps. There are many different techniques and approaches. This book looks at ways of doing meditation to reduce stress and to reduce anxiety in this busy world of ours.

I agree with you that people need to develop themselves daily on a number of different fronts – as you say, physically, mentally and spiritually. However the “real world” can catch up on “time poor” people and this development does not occur.

Meditation may seem easy to do, however it can be difficult to start the process of doing meditation on a daily basis. Like a lot of good things in life, meditation does require some work and some effort in order to benefit from its benefits.

The information in this book and the eight different guided meditations in the free audio CD that comes with the book help greatly.

      Peace,
      David

  5. Hi, David!

Thank you for sharing this amazing book review! It looks like a great book that can help all of us to deal with stress and anxiety.

I enjoyed reading this review, because it seemed that you had some fun writing it. πŸ™‚ I don’t know about other people, but I would love to buy this book, and it’s great that there is CD with guided meditations. Meditation is very helpful if we want to relieve stress, anxiety and live a happy, peaceful life. Who doesn’t want that? Right?

This book can help many people to find something missing in their lives. How many people are suffering from stress and don’t know what to do? This book can be their answer, a tool that can help to let go of stress and learn to manage it.

If we all can learn to meditate and do it daily, we can be peaceful, happy and make this world a truly amazing place to be.

Thank you again, David! Thanks for being who are! πŸ™‚

    Best regards,
    your friend Linda

    • Hi Linda,

Yes, this is a great book that helps people to learn how to do meditation in order to reduce stress and to reduce anxiety.

What I love about the book is that the book explains a lot of things in a logical way to me which I find that I relate to and which I find useful. I find that the eight guided meditations in the free CD that came with the book really good.

I copied the contents of the free CD over to my laptop and find that I do those guided meditations quite often. The person speaking in those guided meditations has a very calm and very relaxing voice, and the guided meditations are done very well. Well worth the cost of the book to get my hands on those guided meditations.

I know an online provider of guided meditations that involves a monthly recurring fee, and the cost of this book was less than the cost of one month with that online provider. And I have access to these eight guided meditations for ever without a monthly recurring fee.

I recommend that you get your hands on the book and on the free CD that comes with the book. πŸ™‚

      Peace,
      David
